Getting noticed in any media is going to be a great kick start to any business.  Getting the right coverage can bring overnight success. The challenge is that a lot of small businesses do not know how to get it or where to focus their energy on.

Here are some steps to help you get going:

Know your market

First of all, you need to know who you are going to focus on. This is called a niche or target market.  If you know what your market is, then you can find media that focuses on the same markets. So once you can answer these questions, you’re in a better position to know who to focus on.

You may turn to different media outlets which might fit as well – such as local newspapers or magazines. Their audience is small but will provide you with a local community of potential customers to work with.

To get media published, you will also need to do some networking. Get to know the right people of the media. Having that relationship will speed up the potential of getting an article published. Also talk to the right journalist that matches the type of story you’re trying to get out to the public.

Create newsworthy content

Media is always about the sales. What the reader wants to read, what he is interested in, what is happening. So if you have something newsworthy, the chances are you are going to have to write the content in a way that is creative, interesting, engaging, and newsworthy. Make sure your content is not too self-promoting, though. They are not advertisement agencies.

Once you get a story published on a site, post the content on your social media profiles, ensuring to gain the growth and search traffic.

If you’re realeasing multiple content over time, make sure you have diverse content. This is to ensure your readers stay engaged.

Sell your content

Any media outlet is going to be swamped with emails and content coming in; make their life easier. Construct email about your content, keep the subject well-informed, keep the email direct and attention grabbing. When you do these, they will give your content a good review.

In the email, give a brief summary of the content that is engaging. Ensure you have the contact details so they can get more information.

Create a press release

The press release is a structured way of submitting content to media outlets. Using this format ­helps the media outlet as it’s in a format that they know.

A general press release should used for events, new products, or unique services –  which should be in the following format:

–          Interesting Headline

–          Informative first paragraph

–          Answers the questions who, what, when, where, and why

–          Social proof or quotes from customers, employees, etc.

This is something that most people will need to practice and refine their skills. As you develop your skills, your ability to get more and more exposure will help you online and offline – getting people to know you who are and hopefully get more sales.
